30 to a single carrier?
30 to a single carrier?
Ok that narrows down the options to:
- JL: very unlikely, they have a very large fleet of B747s and they could do with 30 A380s but they didn't seem to be going down the Airbus path nor the VLA path, however oneworld is bound to have a nice A380 fleet with BA & QF
- NH: would be very surprising, 30 might be a bit too much for them
- CX: would be surprising but they will have a large fleet of B747s to replace and they need to keep up with the competition of EK & SQ
- AI, CA: would be very surprising as 30 might be a bit too much for them
- EK: anything can happen, even the launch of the A380-900!

Pearshaped!
Sorry, I failed to notice the carriers.
I guess this opens wide the scope of possibilities...
Still I think a Japanese carrier would be a breakthrough and probably a final nail in the B748I's coffin. Whether JAL or ANA, I wouldn't know.
Then yes, maybe some Indian carrier such as Air India or Jet Airways. Isn't Kingfisher the only one to have ordered yet?
Cathay Pacific remains an option, depending on their policy with regard to point-to-point vs. hub-and-spoke. A few units would come handy already for LHR nonetheless.
Maybe Asiana or Oasis but I doubt. The Gulf can always come up with a surprise!

EXCLUSIVE: US considers Airbus A380 as Air Force One and potentially a C-5 replacement .....

30 orders before the end of the year is rather unlikely unless its already been confirmed and pending announement. Air India is very likely to order for 747 replacement but only around 15-20. JAL again, very unlikely because of their history with Boeing but can't be ruled out. They definitely need very large airplanes for high density domestic as well as international routes. The slots constraint at both NRT and HND would make A380 a wise choice.
Apart from AI and JAL, I'd tip Air China and China Airlines as most likely Asian customer at this point.
Regarding the Air Force one, I don't think they'd go for A380 even if 747-8 wasn't on offer, most notably because the AF1 would need to be more than a luxury private jet. While the current plane is getting old, i don't see them rushing for a replacement any time soon unless John Travolta takes over the office.

The article mentions fuel efficiency....i hope everyone understands the US gov. isnt interested in fuel efficiency. They are more interested in reliability and payload

I go with Asia-x and ANA.
ANA needs to replace some aging B747D's (Domestics) by 2012 (They will be 20 years old, and they have very high cycles). I can see them ordering 12 A380's for the domestic high-density routes if they need to... before further delivery slots are taken...
Imagine an A380 in that Pokemon livery
HND slots are not restricted, another runway is in construction...
NRT is another story
Here's an artist painting of an ANA A380::

A comment by the pictures says: there is no doubt ANA will be the first Japanese A380-customer.
The artist and I seem to agree.
JAL doesn't have the budget right now, but if ANA goes A380, sooner or later, they will have to do that too.

As a C-5 replacement, the plane would need rough-field landing capabilityand roll-through capability (drive-on doors and ramps) on both ends.A350XWB wrote:EXCLUSIVE: US considers Airbus A380 as Air Force One and potentially a C-5 replacement .....

JAL still has 22 A300 since 2004 when it took-over JAS operations.because anti airbus
Ana has 30 A320 family aircraft in use against 20 of the competing B737 family.
The B747 , the B767 & the B777 were tailored to Japanese operations which is why we don't see any A330-340 family aircraft.
While Ana ordered 50 of the smallest variants of the B787's, I suspect that they are there only to replace the 20 year-old 50+ B767's in the first place, the 50 options being as back-up for the growth.
