VIDEO emergency landing SAS Q400 in Aalborg

Post by LX-LGX » 09 Sep 2007, 21:09

The pilot from a Dash 8-Q400 en route from Kopenhagen to Aalborg estimated a landing gear failure, so he asked for an emergency landing. The right landing gear indeed collapsed during the landing at Aalborg, causing the right wing to touch ground. The right engine caught fire, but the firebrigade was closeby.

All 73 pax and 4 crew members disembarked safely.
(One newspaper says 69+4, and the other says it was 73+4. One says minor injuries, the other says no one injured...).

It seems it is a very common problem on the SAS Q-8's and on the Q8's in general:

the video was so impressive!
lessons to learn:
  • that the warning about a failing undercarriage is not just a warning light, but a serious failure.
my fear to sit next to the propellors of e.g. a ATR proves to be justified.
    a Dash-800 has a strong wing box
it pays off to film every movement around airports.

No cargo door open, it's just an aditional aerodynamic part on the 400Q!
Impressive video...

LN-RDK it is. You can see it in the film about the American that got hurt due to pieces of the prop flying through the fuselage.

That shouldn t be very balanced seen that there is one on starboard side only. I don t know...

SAS pilots are aware of this very common issue on the Q800s.

Is it really a good idea to have retracting landing gears installed on the engine cowling with all the vibrations it contains? I can't say.

Anyway, live-long ATR!!

But if the pilots know that there is a problem with the right landing gear, why not shut down the engine before the emergency landing?

The Dash 8 is no Beech King Air, and those guys have their operational procedures... they have their reasons
Probably they didn t want to add the engine out to the gear problems... because engine out means no go-around possible...

I heard the pax seating around the wings and props were put somewhere else and that there were maybe props pieces that entered the cabin, although it is not confirmed...

Sorry mate, but have a better look at both sides of the fuselage or at another picture of the 400Q, but you certainly know it better, I m just a former dash8 pilot...

This night another SAS Q400 had emergency landing in Vilnius (instead of Palanga). Again problems with landing gear. Right gears did not get properly fixed in position. Plane skid off runway. Passangers all ok.
Sorry, no link in english yet.

According CAA official, pilots turned off right engine during langing in Vilnius.
Also crew transfered passengers to other seats away from proppelers.

And whole SAS Q400 fleet is grounded today.
