Glass Airbridge at AMS

Post by earthman »

An airbridge with all-glass sides has been installed at AMS at gate C09. It's the first item in this video (video is in Dutch). It will be tested for 3 months, then it will be decided whether to replace more metal bridges with the new glass ones. Apparently it costs so much to renovate the old bridges (which has to be done every 20 years, so they can last the 60 years they were designed for), that they might as well buy new ones.

well they've been using glass airbridges for several years at several airports worldwide now, you would think that all the testing etc is done already :s (in europe Brussels, Munich, London Gatwick, Paris CDG, Madrid Barajas, Barcelona, ... all have glass airbridges)

AMS has been hesitating for a long time whether to renovate again or buy new bridges.
They had even appointed a major Consulting Engineering firm to make that analysis and it took more than a year !

The same Chinese manufacturer has sold several similar bridges to CDG a couple of years ago so AMS could easily make up their minds.

But, hey, count on the Dutch (no offense  ) to get a good deal.
A boarding bridge for a 3-month trial !

Maybe a good idea for B.Air : 3-month (free) trials with Embraer, Sukhoi, ...

In the video they also mention that the bridge is made a bit taller than the standard ones, so the tall Dutch people can walk through it without having to bend over.

Also like the AH to go, very similar to the ones at NS stations, to get some juice or something small and at a pretty good price.

Great about the headroom in the aerobridges, although short people wont tel the difference :P

Big disadvantage is that it needs to be cleaned more often because you can see every stain on it.
In wintertime, when people stand sneezing in the bridge, it will be no nice view.

Why is this big news? BRU has 33 glass jetways since 2002...

It's news because AMS didn't have glass bridges yet, but probably finally will have them now.

I saw the bridge yesterday, you can see it from the observation deck. It looks, well, it just looks like a glass airbridge. :)

Actually 31 in total.
17 on the North side of Pier A (stands 140 through 172)
14 on the South (stands 143 through 169).

The only disadvantage I can think of is that there will be a big, ugly banner from the inside if they will be placing ads on them, like they do sometimes with conventional bridges.

They have those on most glas bridges, including at BRU i guess, but is just like advertisements on busses etc.. They are made up out of dots you can barely see on the inside, but are visible on the outside...
