In the late '90s Sukhoi announced they wanted to develop a new very large passenger airliner to compete with what we now know as the Airbus A380. What has become of this project ?

Interesting but very poorly conceived project. I can't believe they even considered this aircraft;
1. Russia has very little need for ultra-long haul high capacity aircraft, there are only about 2 747's in use with Russian Carriers (Transaero) and no A380s on order. IL-96s and even the IL-86's were not that sucessful in terms of orders.
2. Russia has not sucessfully sold passenger jets to the west.
3. The worldwide market for such big aircraft is not that high and even getting 100% of this market would not necessarily guarantee a profitable project. Obviously given that Airbus had committed to the A380 there was no chance of monopolising the market.
3. The project would cost zillions and Sukhoi has no experience developing wide bodied aircraft. In 1998 they had no experience with passenger jets at all.
4. The jump from building fighters to massive passnger jets is simply too steep. Experience doing something a bit smaller is surely necessary.
Hardly surprising sanity prevailed and they decided to develop the Superjet.
