Cathay Pacific Expansion

Post by CXRules »

After announcing the acquisition of Dragonair, Cathay placed an order of six B747-400ERF:

Interesting that they wouldn't wait a little longer for the more efficient 747-8F. It's a indication that freight service is exploding and capacity is the priority right now.
By the way, is there anyone on board who knows how to fly an airplane?

By ordering the 744, CX doesn't take any risk concerning the deliveries and the performance and no additionnal costs regarding maintenance, training...

Concerning the expansion they also have 18 777-300ER on order.

Cargolux expected to receive the first B747-8F in the 3Q of 2009. The Cathay's order bridged that gap from B744 to B748. I believe Cathay receive a good deal out of this as the six planes will be delivered from mid-2008 to mid-2009. They still have 5 orders of B747-400BCF.

By doing this they also give themselves the chance to look at the A380F. A380F may not be as good a freighter as the 748F, but afterall it does carry quite a bit more load per trip.

Maybe, but don't bet on it. A380 and A380F aren't fitting Cathay well at this time, so I don't expect them to order any in the next few years.

According to this report, the order does take up all remaining 747 slots.

Looks like a 2nd Silver Bullet is done, an ex-Varig B747-200SF:

Looking sharp! The rest of the cargo fleet will be stripped to silver.

Well the article (below by ATW) does say that Boeing's rumoured 747-8 stretch is aimed at Cathay... I would be extremely disappointed if they take the 748 as opposed to A380, i hope they don't do it.. 748 is nothing but a stretched 744, and i hope the world's best airline goes for the beast! Probably not this year, not next year but the year after it might be time... their huge 773ER order can last them long enough to wait that long.. And the 748 still hold only up to 500 while the A380 holding up to over 800, there is still a huge gap. sorry off topic, but just my hope. I can imagine them getting 748Fs though..

Cathay should retain the Dragon name, small planes doing odd places in China with CX identity dosent sound good for the airlines image.

I don't know whether or not Cathay will go for B747-8, but at this time, they are not ordering either one (A380 or B748), not this year, probably not next year either. It is because A380 is too big for now, and B748 is still a concept with promise. I think the B747-400ERF order sent a signal that they're not ready to commit to B748 just yet.
