Did any other carrier operate BRU-LTN in the past?
I would believe none have tried before.
I think this route was flown at one point, by Irish/or English company using BACIII's , the name is unknwon, but the logo was a lion's head.

I think the route was served by London European in the past. That airline was eventually bought by Ryanair

bmi should do well. It is a niche route suitably timed for business travellers

Back in 1983-1984 a small British company Euroflite tried the EGGW route with a Jetstream.

London European Airways was active on EGGW between May 22 1987 and January 20 1989 with BAC111s. In January 1988 they changed name to Ryan Europe, when becoming a subsidiary of Ryanair. In Augustus 1990 they reverted to the old name London European Airways, but ceased ops on December 17 1990.

Brussels - Luton BMI
I think it's time easyJet goes into the BRU market and prevent BMI from making this mistake.

There were last year negotiations between BIAC and Easyjet. But no plane seen here for so far.

LJ, why do you think it would be a mistake for BMI to start up BRU-LTN?

I believe BMI does not have an established base at LTN. However they may possibly find a niche market on this route. Perhaps they may already have some corporate deals. BRU-LTN may experience less competition from Eurostar, thus permitting higher fares. FR no longer operates CRL-STN...

If desirable, EasyJet could possibly blow BMI easily out of the route. However for whatever reasons EasyJet does not seem to be interested in BRU so far.

Thanks

What carriers operated BRU-STN in the past?
I have already flown BRU-LTN in the past. I think it was with Air UK (which later became KLM uk) on a BAe146 six-abreast in the 1980ies.

For info: following their current winter schedule, BMI will keep its 42 weekly flights from BRU to LHR, even while introducing 18 weekly BRU-LTN flights.

SN will increase BRU-LGW from 11 to 12x weekly (one additional frequency on Saturday), and BA will increase BRU-LHR from 52 to 53x weekly (one additional frequency on Saturdays). Please do note that I have excluded the SN Brussels operated flight to LHR on Saturday evenings.

Last but not least: VLM will keep its 26 weekly flights from BRU to LCY.

In summary: if the schedules for this winter stay like this, we will have 152 flights a week from Brussels to London.

When the Channel Tunnel Rail Link Phase 2 opens I expect there will be some reductions to the 153 weekly (including the SN LHR flight) flights between BRU and LON. Shorter Eurostar journey times and more trains will probably affect the leisure market (LGW) and VLM to LCY the most. LTN will be too far away from Central London to feel much effect and LHR flights will still be used for connections

Amazing this a service reminding me off a regular bus service! :D

Can anyone explain the backbone of all these flights? had a quick look and even Amsterdam and Paris don't have that many flights!

Is it because of all these connecting flights in the UK? Or the leisure market? Or tons of businessman going either to Brussels or London?

Very possible, except fort the once weekly SN Brussels Airlines operated BRU-LHR flight on saturday evening (return on sunday morning) which will NOT be discontinued, no matter what the loadfactor, simply because SN are keeping the slot warm.

As you know, slots are LHR are worth millions of euro, yet contrary to all their other slots at LHR, SN hasn't been able to sell BA this particular slot because at present British Airways don't need additional capacity during the quietest day of the week. However, it would be foolish of SN to just stop operating this odd flight (which turns break even BTW) and throw away the money they will be able to make from the slot one day.

I can not back it up with actual numbers, however I believe the LON-AMS market is way bigger than LON-BRU. LON-AMS is probably the busiest route within Europe.

All LON-AMS traffic occurs by air, while Eurostar may have 30-50% of the LON-BRU market. KL does or used to fly widebodies on LHR-AMS. In addition to BA, BMI and KLM you have EasyJet and possibly other carriers on LON-AMS, offering frequent connections to LTN/LGW/STN as well.

That's what I think as well...

A quick summary:

1) AMS-LHR
- KL
- BA
- BD

2) AMS-LGW
- EZY
- BA

3) AMS-LCY
- VG
- KL

4) AMS-LTN
- EZY

5) AMS-STN
- EZY

Should have made it clearer. I put '(including the SN LHR flight)' as my figure was one bigger than Sabena_690's, which didnt include that flight. I never expected it to be discontinued

@Humberside: the 152 in my posting is including the SN flight. I did not include the SN flight in the number of weekly BA flights from BRU to LHR.

Can you tell me the breakdown for Egypt. Destinations? Aircraft type? Scheduled/Charter?

I know TUI are increasing their BRU-CAI scheduled service from 2 to 3x weekly services this winter.
