[Pics] Day trip to Göteborg with Brussels Airlines and SAS - Story of a missed connection

Post by sn26567 »

Time for another day trip. The destination was Gothenburg (Göteborg in Swedish), a new destination for me. After a breakfast at Exki, I swiftly proceeded to Gate A46.
A new destination for me. Brussels Airlines flight SN2313 codeshared with Etihad, Air Canada and United

While waiting, a nice surprise: the arrival of "Ptasie Mleczko" (Bird's Milk) Embraer E170 of LOT

Flight: SN2313, codeshared with Etihad Airways, Air Canada and United Airlines
Date : 09/03/2017
Aircraft: Airbus A319 OO-SSU
From-To: Brussels - Göteborg (BRU-GOT)
Seat: 9A (window, emergency exit row)
Scheduled/Effective Time of Departure: 09:45/09:45 (GMT+1)
Scheduled/Effective Time of Arrival: 11:30/11:28 (GMT+1)
Scheduled/Effective Duration of the flight: 1 hr 45 min/1 hr 43 min

Today's plane is Airbus A319 registered OO-SSU, one of the few with two emergency exits above the wing (former easyJet plane)

I had booked my seat the day before and was positively surprised I could still get one in the first of two emergency exit rows (former easyJet plane).

The load factor was about 60%, which means a free seat next to me. :)

Take-off from the usual 25R in a light fog. Nothing special to mention during a flight without any problem. On-time departure and arrival.

Landing on Rwy 21 in Göteborg Landvetter with a rather dense fog and a temperature of 2°C. Docking at Gate 16.

Flight: SK449 codeshared with Austrian Airlines and bmi regional
Date : 09/03/2017
Aircraft: ATR72-600 OY-JZH operated by JetTime
From-To: Göteborg - Copenhagen (GOT-CPH)
Seat: 8F
Scheduled/Effective Time of Departure: 18:30/18:59 (GMT+1)
Scheduled/Effective Time of Arrival: 19:25/19:52 (GMT+1)
Scheduled/Effective Duration of the flight: 0 hr 55 min/h hr mm min

After a visit to the city of Göteborg, I had a light dinner at the airport. The SAS flight to Copenhagen was announced with a 10 minutes delay, but in practice it became worryingly more. I had only 40 minutes to connect in CPH, and a 30 minutes delay would make the connection impossible!

The plane was a nice recent ATR72-600.

Boarding from Gate 12. Load factor 100%. Take-off from Rwy 21. A free coffee, tea or water were served: always welcome.

Landing in Copenhagen was 27 minutes late. The stewardess kindly informed on the gates for the connecting flights: mine was B19 for SAS to BRU.

Parking at a remote position, thus need to wait for all passengers being on the bus.

Arrival at the terminal at the departure time of the connecting flight, and then having to go more than 1 km to reach Gate B19 at the far end of Pier B. Of course, when I arrived at the gate, it was closed although the plane was still there!
30 minutes late meant missing the connecting flight from Copenhagen to Brussels: Gate closed!

... although the plane had not yet left the gate (note that it is the A320 in retro colours!)

The gate agent told me she waited as long as possible before closing the gate, but she had to do it before I could reach it. She said I should go to the SAS Service Centre (more than 1 km back). On the way I saw there was a Brussels Airlines flight scheduled at 21:35 and hoped that they would re-book me on that flight. And they did! As a compensation for the missed connection, SAS even upgraded me from the lowest economy fare to Fast&Flex, and 1250 Miles&More instead of 125 :)

Again 1 km walk to reach Gate A17 at the far end of Pier A.
SAS rebooked me on the Brussels Airlines flight 90 minutes later, SN2264 operated by Avro RJ100 OO-DWL

Flight: SN2264
Date : 09/03/2017
Aircraft: Avro RJ100 OO-DWL
From-To: Copenhagen - Brussels (CPH-BRU)
Seat: 2F
Scheduled/Effective Time of Departure: 21:35/21:20 (GMT+1) 15 minutes ahead of schedule: :)
Scheduled/Effective Time of Arrival: 23:10/22:44 (GMT+1)
Scheduled/Effective Duration of the flight: 1 hr 35 min/h hr mm min

The flight was announced 10 minutes ahead of schedule. It did even better by pushing back 15 minutes ahead. Meanwhile I had asked for and received an orange juice: the emotions and the running had made me very thirsty.
Early departure! We even left the gate earlier, at 21:20

Load factor was a pale 20%, with 5 passengers, including myself, in Fast&Flex, and 15 passengers further back. A free small dinner was served after take-off from Rwy 22R:
The meal on board: chicken Tabbouleh from FoodMaker

Very pleasant flight in the very comfortable Avro. It will be a pity to see them disappear.

Arrival at Gate A43 almost half an hour early after the usual landing on 25L.

Hi,

Nice report , THX !

Altough you missed the retro A320, one of the last flights in ARJ100 with Flex&Fast was indeed a nice gesture from SAS :)

Indeed: I'm almost sure I got a better flight on SN than I would have gotten on SAS. But I was amazed at how swiftly and efficiently they handled the case at their Service Centre.

Interesting report and photos. Missing a connection is something I dread in September, especially our outward flight which has a shorter connection time than our return flight.

By the way the aircraft is OY-JZH and not OH-JZH or OO-JZH :-)
Sabena and Sobelair - gone but never forgotten.
