I also use a telescope to look at contrailing a/c.
I am currently using a 35x magnification eyepiece which is good enough to see the airline colours.

Does anyone use a different eyepiece?

you might maybe not believe me...but a simple 10x25 (1000m = 96m). And believe me or not , most of the time I am pretty correct with the identification although the light is my biggest enemy , from the moment the planes are even a fraction more to the south (to the sun) from my point of view , it makes them already 50% harder to identify or simply impossible...type neither airline can be seen than

. But anyway...if they're in the north you can easily spot them quite correct...All types should be pretty good visible (small planes best not higher than 29500ft for good recognition. Bigger planes can easily spotted correctly up to 37000 or even 40000ft. Of course another parameter for that is the position. The best position for contrails for me is about a mile or two further to the north than the point that I am standing. Preferably without contrail

Because that are often LH planes from FRA heading to the USA or Carribean (LTU , DE , ...) about 26000ft-27000ft, still climbing out of FRA

( about 20 minutes airborne).

So to make a long story short. Yes , I CAN see them well , although some better material WOULD be awesome!!!!:P As long as the light is not in my way it's fine. And if they're not to far , or not right above me (sometimes kind a hard to identify if you only see the underside

As could be seen on my home webcam also good opportunities on Sunday January 29 2006.

Around 1400LT a B747-400 of Lufthansa heading W.

Around 1710LT an A330-200 of MyTravel Airways was cruising W.

Around 1720LT, the last rays of Sun touched this DC10 of Gemini, cruising W.

I am sure it is not China southern 777, it can't be Korean air, because their blue does not go that much under the fuselage.

Very likely a Thomsonfly B767-300.

Today January 30 more sun with one highlight.

Around 1520LT this B747SP A9C-HMH of Bahrain Royal Flight heading W.

My guess is also for a Britannia/Thomasonfly plane. Defenitely not a 757, but a 767 series! My guess is the short one, although not sure.

February 1 2006, after the smog some sunny spells in afternoon giving a few contrail shots.
Again I saw the A9C-HMH cruising W, around 1640LT.

1443LT: this B747-400 of cargolux came from the NNW and lost its contrail on its way to ELLX.

1446LT: the "Blue Peters" BA 752 G-CPEM was heading home, sadly a bit too zenithal.
