Fifty years ago : crash of two BAF C119

Post by airazurxtror »

On 12 december 1961, two BAF C119 took off from Melsbroek, three minutes apart, with Chièvres as first destination.
CP-23 (OT-CBC), captain Jules Gérard, had Solenzara (Corsica) as final destination; CP-25 (OT-CBE), 1st sergeant José De Caigny, was to go on to Liège.
They collided in flight on approach to Chièvres. All 13 members of the crews (8 + 5) were killed.
No fault of the crews, but misunderstanding and errors by ATC and GCA personel.

I contacted David Steiner (he spent 484 hours in C-119s). His C-119 Missions are described on his blog. And in case someone is interested, his columns are published in the Allenspark Wind.
Sorry for bumping.

I just can't understand how can one spend almost 500 hours in such a noisy C-119. Btw, David's blog provide truly unique facts about his missions.
