R-4360 engines on a PBY-5A

Post by Jacobcullen » 09 Mar 2019, 12:32

Ok so hear me out. Let's just say I stumbled upon a pair of R-4360 B6 Wasp Major engines that were in really good shape. And let's also say I own a PBY-5A Catalina (my dream plane I want to own). Would it be possible to put the R-4360s on the PBY or would it shake itself apart from too much torque?

I know many of the civilian PBYs have R-2600 radials in them instead of the R-1830s. I also know the the R-2600s only produce 1750hp max compared to the whopping 3500hp produced by the R-4360 B6 engines.

This is all a theoretical question for shits and gigglesNox VidMate Mobdro

A bit of a queer question, especially on this "aviation" forum - where perhaps not all have heard of a PBY...

My main concern would be the extra weight of the 4360's - quite substantially more. What payload margin would remain on the poor Catalina airframe? Sufficient fuel for take-off and a single circuit, perhaps, with due reserves, and all that at substantially increased fuel flow? If the crew are not (US-average) plus size ;) ?

No worries about surplus power/torque: the revised airworthiness documents will tell max. rpm in various phases of flight. Less rpm will bring less torque, less power, no worries there. Bit of self-discipline required, though, on the pilot(s); but most are very good at that, actually they are tested at each renewal of license.

Keep us posted of progress (if any)!

But with such large wings you could generate a considerable amount of lift still. As for the tail you might lose a lot of authority unless theres a large boost to control systems.

You most likely shorten the 4 paddle blades as well seeing how the original scheme called for 3 blades I believe 9Appsapk.com VidMate.vin Get-vidmate.in Apk9apps.com 9apps install

If you're willing to redesign and build all new structures for it sure, but it would be a ridiculous overcompensation.

I've always thought it would be cool to own a piece of history like the PBY-5, and I'd rather not buy a Chinese plane when I could buy the Russian or American plane they copied.
