Wizz Air in 2014

Post by airazurxtror »

The Wizz Air fleet - currently 45 A320 - will grow to 53 in 2014 with the deliveries of brand new airplanes from Airbus.

This fleet will serve a growing network including the already announced opening of the airline’s 18th and 19th operating bases in Lviv, Ukraine, and in Craiova, Romania, in 2014. Existing operations in Bucharest, Budapest, Skopje, Sofia, Vilnius and Warsaw will also expand in the coming months.

Wizz Air carried 13.5 million passengers in 2013, representing a growth of 12% year on year, with an average load factor of 86%. There are over 300 routes to 35 countries on sale.

During the closure of Milan Bergamo Airport (between 13 May 00:01 and 2 June 06:00), Wizz Air flights will operate from/to Milan Malpensa Airport.

Wizz Air announced that passengers are now allowed to use Portable Electronic Devices (PEDs) such as mobile phones, electronic readers and tablet computers, on all Wizz Air flights. The new guidelines for the use of PEDs on board aircraft have been issued by the European Aviation Safety Agency (EASA) and adopted by the Hungarian Civil Aviation Authority. In conformity with these new guidelines Wizz Air now allows the use of such devices when operated in flight mode during any phase of the flight.

Passengers are asked to remove headphones during the safety announcements of the cabin crew and switch off electronic devices when the crew cannot confirm that these are operating in flight mode and match the criteria for usage during the flight. Larger electronic devices which could lead to injuries, such as laptops, will need to be stored for take-off and landing.

Wizz Air announced the halving of its Belgrade capacity with the closure of low fare services to Oslo Torp and Brussels Charleroi and the reduction of flight frequencies to other destinations after airport charges rose by 40%, making Belgrade Airport the most expensive in Wizz Air’s base network. The Belgrade routes to Oslo and Brussels will be discontinued from 6 May, and customers with bookings affected by these cuts will be offered a full refund.
The continued access of Serbian consumers to low cost air travel is now jeopardized by the airport’s refusal to further incentivize low cost air travel, affordable to all consumers. Instead, the airport prepared a tailor made incentive scheme that protects one high fare airline (Etihad/Air Serbia) and its transfer passenger focused business model.

Wizz Air could launch London-Győr routefrom the newly expanded Győr-Pér Airport chiefly used by the German car manufacturer Audi

Hungarian low-cost airline Wizz Air is considering a London flight from the newly expanded Győr-Pér Airport chiefly used by the German car manufacturer Audi, Hungarian regional daily Kisalföld reported today.

State secretary Péter Szijjártó told the daily that an agreement on the new route is expected to be reached by the end of this year. Zsolt Borkai, the mayor of Győr, said that for supporting such a route, the airport needs an investment of several hundred billion forints – with the involvement of the state – to build a passenger terminal.

The recent €6.6 mln expansion of the airport, which serves the nearby base of German carmaker Audi, was inaugurated yesterday. The airport is now equipped to accomodate Boeing 737 and Airbus 320 aircraft.

I'm amazed by some of these new routes! (and not only those of Wizz Air)
How can they fill an A320 on Katowice-Maastricht, e.g.?

In light of the current rumous regarding Wizz air and AF/KLM,it's interesting that Wizz air is expanding in NL and opening up at new Transavia bases.

Perhaps we'll see some routes open up soon to Transavia France bases...?

Extracts :

Wizz Air now has over 300 routes, annual revenues of 1 billion euros, counts Ryanair, another no-frills airline as its main competitor, and dominates air travel in a region with faster economic growth than the rest of Europe.
Organic expansion in the region and as far afield as Moscow, Tel-Aviv or Dubai is set to continue while a new phase of growth is likely to come from Wizz Air exploiting the difficulties of state-backed regional airlines that are struggling to survive.
"These airlines either disappear, or merge, or shrink a lot from their current size," said Jozsef Varadi, Wizz Air chief executive. "Either way that means opportunity for Wizz Air."
Wizz Air is well placed to pounce on other regional airlines - Poland's LOT [LT.UL], Czech Airlines, Latvia's Air Baltic, and Slovenia's Adria Airways are all propped up by state aid.
LOT is especially vulnerable, with local press reports saying it is in financial difficulties and Wizz Air has many Polish-speaking flight crew and five operating bases in Poland.
The Eastern European low-cost market offers huge opportunities. It is expected to grow to $4.12 bln by 2018 from around $3 billion this year, according to Euromonitor International, or a growth rate of 40 percent compared to 20 percent expected in Western Europe during the same period.

Wizz Air stole a march on its low-cost rivals by entering the untapped eastern European market first, but Ryanair has since caught up.
Ryanair remains Wizz Air's fiercest competitor, with the two companies expected to entrench for an intensifying competition for share of a quickly expanding market.

Wizz Air is now in a straight fight with Ryanair to keep costs down and squeeze revenue from passengers.
Their average ticket prices are nearly identical. The two airlines are fairly close to one another on the main benchmark, cost per available seat kilometer, which for each carrier is around 0.35 euro cents.
Ryanair, Europe's leanest airline, does better on fuel, airport services, and the cost of the aircraft it operates, according to the Centre for Aviation, an Australian-based aviation industry consultancy.
Yet Wizz Air is leaner than Ryanair in others ways, in part because its workforce is based in lower-cost eastern Europe.

"We have produced an annual growth rate of about 15 percent in recent years and our portfolio is so diverse, we are present in so many markets, that I think we can keep that up regardless of any turbulence," said Varadi.

Low cost airline Wizz Air is considering opening a base in Bosnia and Herzegovina’s third largest city, Tuzla, following talks between the no frills carrier, the Federation Minister for Transport and Communication Enver Bijedić and officials from both the Tuzla canton government and the airport. It comes after the success Wizz Air has enjoyed in Tuzla since launching flights there in 2013. The low cost airline initially inaugurated services from Malmo to Tuzla on a seasonal summer basis in June last year. However, shortly after, the service was given a year long run and new flights from Basel and Gothenburg were introduced as well. Only a few weeks ago, Wizz Air launched services from Dortmund and Eindhoven to the Bosnian city.

However, Tuzla Airport is also seeking to boost revenue and achieve profitability in 2017. While not disclosing any details, the airport’s management hinted its current agreement with Wizz Air has not improved its finances, which is why it is looking to a reach a compromise with the low cost airline. “The ministry has insisted for Wizz Air to boost revenue so Tuzla Airport can function better in the future and improve its financial results”, Minister Bijedić said. It has not been revealed whether Wizz Air enjoys benefits at Tuzla Airport such as discounts or waived fees for handling, landing and other infrastructure use. The airport stressed it was seeking a solution which would not harm Wizz Air’s operations in Tuzla.

Recently, Wizz Air’s Chief Commercial Officer, Gyorgy Abran said, “Our presence in Tuzla demonstrates our commitment to Bosnia and Herzegovina and we hope to further develop our operations in this market”. In the first half of the year, Tuzla Airport welcomed 53.053 passengers, a massive increase of 691% compared to the 6.706 passengers handled during the same period in 2013. If Wizz Air chooses to base an aircraft in the city it will ensure continued growth for the airport, which has been mostly deserted since opening its doors for commercial traffic in 2008. Wizz Air already has two bases in the former Yugoslavia, in Skopje and Belgrade respectively.

Not when it is official news published by airlines or other official bodies.
