Thought it might be fun if we would share interesting aviation related "discoveries" we made with google earth...
First one: I think I saw what looks like a Sabena Avrojet parked at a gate in Birmingham. Here are the coördinates:
N: 52 27 11 32
W: 01 44 14 32
I'm not too sure about it though, but it does look like an Avro in the "ghost" livery...
Also, lots of Germany is in very high detail. Have a look at the Frankfurt airport... the level of detail is astonishing!
Spotting with Google Earth...

I think you're right indeed. Though, in 2002 SNBA still operated 2 or 3 Avro's in the former Sabena ghost-livery (but with the bold blue Sabena titles removed). As the jetway is parked against the front, this is not visible.b-west wrote:I think I saw what looks like a Sabena Avrojet parked at a gate in Birmingham (...) Indeed ! Already spotted the B-2450 at Cargo City Nord ? The details are so fine that you can even read the reg on the upper side of the wing. Astonishing indeed !b-west wrote:Also, lots of Germany is in very high detail. Have a look at the Frankfurt airport... the level of detail is astonishing!
At LHR, you can see the VG Airlines A330 in Delsey c/s parked at the gate.
N 51° 28' 26.01"
W 0° 27' 44.68"
I did some research and in 2002 it was operating for MEA during a week on their BEY-LHR flight.

Nice catch!Robin_Bamps wrote:

Still, get the impression that Germany hast the biggest resolution... you can even see people walking around on the tarmac.Stij wrote:CDG and JFK are pretty detailed as well. In fact, most US major airports are pretty detailed.

An here's another little mistery, plucked from news://uk.rec.aviation
To me it looks like 2 planes at different altitudes, even so it is a funny coincidence...While playing with Google Earth, i found a place with two planes
overlapping each other:
http://213.235.28.68/temp/TwoPlanes.kmz
It looks like it is 747, probably 747-400. But i am not sure why there
are two planes in such proximity. Could it be the shadow? But why is it
in colour then? Or could it be the reflection off the clouds? But how
could the while vapour trace also reflect off the clouds?
May be it is just the spot when two photos taken at different times
been merged together, so these are two different planes (or the same
plane at different times)? But you usually clearly see such a boundary
between two photos in Google Earth. This is different. Plus chance of
taking two photos and catching a plane in almost exactly the same spot
on both of them must be rather slim
