MD-XX?
The twin engined derivative of the MD-11 http://www.cardatabase.net/modifiedairl ... d=00006105
McDonnel Douglas even planned a plane they called the MD-XX. The artist impression shows a 3 engine type design with approx 350/400 pax.

PS: Nice to read the rumors of 9 years ago: Will Airbus buy Douglas?

Surprised no-one brought up the MD12, the goodlooking brother of the A380...

MD-12
How well were the features of MD-12 frozen before it was abandoned?
MD-12 seems to be smaller and stubbier than any A380 so far. Had 2-4-2 on upper deck like A380 and 3-5-3 on lower. A380 probably can have 3-5-3 and will have 3-5-3 in this winter... So similar cross-sections
But smaller - I remember around 60 m long, 60 m wingspan. That means, somewhat longer than B747SP.
Narrow wingspan and short fuselage might make MD-12 light. Especially if the fuselage is light and weak... lighter than, say, Airbus 380SP or Airbus 380-600.
But Airbus also is designing A350 with similar but different cross-section to 300/310/330/340, lighter materials and new wing.
Could Airbus produce Airbus 390-600, with a fuselage cross-section based on 380, but made lighter by use of 350 materials, and a smaller wing?
