UAL Corp. parent of bankrupt United Airlines, said yesterday (04 March 2003) it lost $382 million for the month of January. The airline paid $222 million for fuel and recorded $276 million in labor costs.

US Airways failed for a second time in two weeks to make payments of 44.5 million related to 23 Airbus planes in its fleet (14 A-319s, three A-320s, and six A-321s). US Airways has currently 38 orders outstanding at Airbus.

Ryanair will start shortly flying to Malaga and Faro, two new airports where it is expected that the airline cannot achieve the usual substantial discounts.

Thai Airways bought this week 7 Boeing 747s from United Airlines for 330 million USD. This is less than 50 million USD per plane while these normally list at 150 million USD per plane. This deal will only improve the liquidity of United on the short term.

Boeing will decide by mid-year whether or not it will launch a stretch version of its money-losing 717. Boeing has received only 153 orders for the 717, while it expected to have some 200 orders. 10 airlines currently use the 717.
