Putting on a brave face is usually a good thing. But when you make a poor business decision only because you want a brave face, it is simply folly. On the other hand, this announcement may be Airbus giving UPS the option of delaying their order rather than cancelling outright. Sorta like the guy who...

Emirates Airlines has really opened up the East-West travel industry. I liken it to the opening of trading routes in the spice trade centuries ago.

One can only hope that this increased travel between East and West results in more cultural dialogue and understanding. One can only hope anyways.

Great news for the 767 program. The production line may continue for quite awhile after all. Let's make the following explicitly clear, so we don't get into a spat about the A380. "The order for the 27 B-767s is not related to UPS’s on-going review of its order for 10 Airbus A380 freighters. Th...

But, they still give a confident picture: ... Boeing said that it still expected the 787 to be delivered "on time and in accord with its contractual obligations". ... In other words: "if something goes wrong, it will be not our fault". Boeing's not entirely Japanese just yet. :w...

Before leaving for Ford, Alan Mullaly pushed through an implementation of a Lean Supply Chain at Boeing, modeled after the Toyota Production System. This implementation was done after the disastrous shutdown of the 737 production line some years ago. Boeing realized its production system was a compl...

RC20, where'd you hear that Boeing's wing design group is better than Airbus'? I'm not contesting it, as I have no basis to do so. But I'd like to know the source. Airbus was able to design one wing for both the 4-engine 340 and the 2-engine 330. If I didn't know any better, I'd say that's crazy tal...

What do you think Thai will do with those when (if) they get the A380?
Turn around and sell them for a quick profit :D , even before getting the A380's.

Nice. The turquoise and orange are great. It seems like every airline today selects from only four colors -- navy blue, red, gold, or gray.

Sure, the Sonic Cruiser was a mistake. Boeing had made the wrong decision and killed it before it endangered the company. It's not about Airbus making the wrong decision . It's about Airbus having indecision . It's their indecision that is making me lose confidence they know what they are doing. Som...

WOW!! I'm stunned that Airbus is thinking of changing to barrel sections. This is not a small change. This is indeed a "re-do". You can't compare changes in entertainment systems to a major overhaul of primary structures. The scale of work is not the same and the impact to schedule is not ...

I don't mean to complain, but that's hardly newsworthy. Denver Airport was blanketed by four straight days of heavy snow last week. Hundreds of flights were cancelled and the stranded passengers were sleeping in the airport for several days. :(

I tend to think that Alan Mullaly benefited from a lot of self-promotion and was often in the right place at the right time. But I can't deny that he successfully brought the 777 to market as program head. As head of Boeing Commercial Airplanes, he implemented a lean supply chain, showing a degree o...

A few years back, there was an Airbus plane in a Russian airline that crashed, killing all aboard. The pilots had violated the rules and allowed two teenage visitors to the cockpit to sit in the pilot and co-pilot seats. One of them disengaged the autopilot and the plane went into a spin. The failur...

Continental flight - Pilot dies, Co-Pilot lands the plane

On a flight from Houston bound for Puerto Vallarta, Mexico, the Pilot took ill and eventually passed away. Co-Pilot made an emergency landing. Good work by the Co-Pilot to get a handle on the situation.

Interesting perspective. But is spoke-hub-spoke any less polluting than point-to-point. While hub-to-hub flight would be less polluting per passenger, you'll usually have one or two commuter flights. Spoke-hub-spoke will usually be a longer route per passenger. A week ago, my flight from Dallas to O...

I look at it differently. An airline that needs to order medium wide-bodies in the 2012-13 timeframe has to consider the 787 and the 350, both of which currently have plenty of slots available. In this timeframe, the 787 has more advantages than disadvantages over the 350. 1) By that time, the 787 w...
