Re: Flight Data Failure at Belgocontrol -> Clear The Sky

If radar fails, pilots flying commercial plane will never swith to VFR... First of all, companies don't allow pilots to do so. Then what if they are not in VMC conditions? And last but not least, to fly VFR you need some knowledge of the area you are flying in and VFR maps. When radar fails, it is A...

Re: Flight Data Failure at Belgocontrol -> Clear The Sky

"Clear the sky" is an ATC procedure. The name itself is wrong, it should say "clear the airspace controlled by Belgocontrol". Traffic under Maastricht ACC's control (above FL245) and above belgian territory was not affected at all... Traffic at regional airports (for example a PP...

@Kriva Last en-route procedural course was given 25 years ago in Belgium. Last approach procedural around 15 years ago. EBBR back-up tower was used live half a year ago: true. There is no back-up for the ACC/APP control room, which is the most important after all. Without ACC/APP, no flights... And ...

Re: Flight Data Failure at Belgocontrol -> Clear The Sky

@ Passenger True, failures can happen everywhere. Here we are talking about 3 major failures in 3 years. It's not about an airport but about air traffic control. This service provider that has no other procedure than a "clear the sky" in case things go wrong. There is NO contingency ops-ro...

19th July 2018: flight data failure 6th June 2017: power failure 27th May 2015: major power failure Each time the belgian sky was "cleared"... In 2015 for several long hours... Plus all the failures which nobody talks or knows about (frozen radar screens, voice communication (radio or phon...

Re: Flight Data Failure at Belgocontrol -> Clear The Sky

And about that "clear the sky" procedure: why is it so drastic? Just for a AFTN (FPL (and other data) distribution) problem? Seriously? What about the use of the old paper strips? How were controllers doing before? Belgian controllers have several back-up systems, a fallback radar, emergen...

Re: Flight Data Failure at Belgocontrol -> Clear The Sky

Happy to hear what isn't true in my statement. During a shift from 06.45 till 14.15, controllers work 4 hours effectively (in some units, even less) and leave at 13.00. Same is valid for other shifts. Pay varies between 4000€ until above 10000€ after tax (above 10000 being reached every trimester wi...

Re: Flight Data Failure at Belgocontrol -> Clear The Sky

It is high time for Belgium to change their ATC service provider... So many failures, so many disruptions, such a poor work, so many people who work "1 hour on 1 hour off" for 6000€/month after tax, 35 hours/week (from which they steal every day with early leaves), and so much more. Shame!

Re: Air Belgium: a rebirth?

Have they told Ryanair/Wizzair/Jetair that each time a A340 (or any aircraft of the same category) operates in CRL: - it blocks several parking stands - it blocks all the traffic on the apron (impossible to overtake it like two B737 or A320 can do) - once it uses the taxiway south, no other movement...

Re: 2017 Brussels South Charleroi Airport (CRL/EBCI) latest news

Shame! Flying schools based at CRL would like to thank Belgocontrol for that! Staff problems have been existing for many years and they are only recruiting now when it's too late. Let's finally have ATC done by a professional company in Belgium! @ Charleroi airport: go and have a chat with NATS: the...

Good luck working for such a company http://www.lesoir.be/131412/article/2017-12-28/des-vols-de-loisirs-interdits-du-30-decembre-au-4-janvier-laeroport-de-charleroi They are not even able to ensure a continuous correct service  Thanks for the money lost by all the flight schools based in CRL

They selected less than 1% of the candidates
Probably foreign controllers aren't good enough, or would they be too good?

Re: Belgocontrol ATCO vacancies

Working conditions are: - 25 days a month minimum (often more) - up to 12 consecutive days They pay controllers 250% for the extra hours (above 35 hours per week) so that they accept working more... Afternoon shift followed by morning shift: very common Controllers sleeping in Canac to avoid going b...

Be careful before applying and ask controllers about their working conditions: surprising!

Re: 2017 Brussels South Charleroi Airport (CRL/EBCI) latest news

What the article says is absolutely true.
Some people do not need to go through the security checks. A least they go through the same gate as pilots but they are not searched (bags either)

Re: 06/06/2017 power failure at Belgocontrol

Glad that we partly agree ;) Also had similar experiences elsewhere but this is repetitive in Belgium. Moreover we can't compare BRU (650 movements/day) with CDG (1300), BCN (850) or FCO (860). DUS is comparable but they may sometimes use only one runway at a time due to noise restrictions and their...

Re: 06/06/2017 power failure at Belgocontrol

Recent experience: Inbound BRU from the east with runway 01, vectored for a right hand circuit too high (no descent given), then flown accross the final until AFI followed by a visit of Chievres airbase and almost a visit of Charleroi airport (5 miles away). That's around 40NM extra compared to the ...

Re: 06/06/2017 power failure at Belgocontrol

When are they going to change? This ATC provider is one of the poorest of Europe: has any pilot ever received an expected approach time when coming into BRU? At peak times they sometimes vector you miles and miles away at low altitude (like if they forgot that holding patterns exist), noone knows wh...
