Re: 787 Delay
I don't see the cancellations as huge issue, nor the delays Getting the damned thing flying is critical or the whole thing collapses. I am interigueb tye the Light Wide body that reaplces the 787-3 (you can say good by to that versions!). They are refusing to extend its range, short to medium only, ...

Re: New planes for Russian Airforce
They are going to need them!
Mig29 came apart reportedly the keel was corroded into failure mode, Morocco gave all their back and canceled the whole project. Something like 650 Russian Air Force Mig 29s involved I believe. Oooops
F15 has that issue was well, but fixable.

Re: 787 Delay
Not quite that old and not quite that pessimistic, but they just can't seem to get their act together. It would seem they would have been able to keep testing going without machinists, but then I don't know the organization or structure. So, a two month strike cases 4 more months of delay? Maybe onc...

787 Delay, again
The following is very interesting http://seattlepi.nwsource.com/business/397548_dreamliner27.html So, they aren't replacing all the bad fasteners, the strike added maybe two months to the program (though stuff was still going on) and its delayed until June (and I am not taking any bets!) No Dreamlif...

Boeing Changing Plans
This is really interesting http://www.businessweek.com/bwdaily/dnflash/content/jan2009/db20090116_971202.htm?chan=top+news_top+news+index+-+temp_top+story I always felt it was insane for Boeing to count on single source of structural portions of the 787 (wings and wing boxes). If you are going to do...

Re: Are you a Romantic or Analyst?
acahce, thank you for the nice comments. As for the A380, I think we have to agree to disagree, though I think you have the visionary side of this and I have the bean counter side. More or less the Airbus contention was that they could create an aircarft 1. like the 747 that they could price at a pr...

Re: Are you a Romantic or Analyst?
An interesting perspective. However, I would add, that what separates the categories ultimately is success. The 747 is a business success, even if it had romantic heritage. The A380 is never going to archive break even, let alone financial success. There will be no new orders for at least two years,...

FedEx and 777F
FedEx has upped the order http://seattletimes.nwsource.com/html/businesstechnology/2008619972_webboeing13.html Now 30 Firm orders. 15 options turned into firm orders and another 15 options taken First deliverery delayed until June which is FedEx fiscal years, so a combo of the delay anyway with the ...

Re: A350 Design Freeze Delay
There are comments about weight issues and other design details to be worked out. I suspect a date of of 2014 close to best case, 2015 more realistic. Airbus has been undergone chronic re-structure, and the latest with the moving of the A400 into a new division plays into it (as well as the attempts...

Re: Black boxes reveal no clues in Air NZ crash
The bizzare thing about this is, that you keep hearing from the NTSB (US safety organization) that they need more data. They get more data and they still can't figure out what happened most of the time. If they get answers its by piecing it together form bits and pieces, sometimes the best informati...

Re: A350 Design Freeze Delay
Clark admitted such delays are increasingly common. "If you look at the history of aircraft programs on both sides of the Atlantic, they almost always come to market late," he said, noting Airbus recently pushed off design freeze for the A350 until 2009, a delay that could impact its sched...

A350 Design Freeze Delay
http://www.aero-news.net/index.cfm?ContentBlockID=87377757-241c-4ab7-89bf-13ba87f0842f Av Week has been saying this for a month or so now. My take is that Airbus put themselves in a tough position. The A350 is not a 787 competitor )along the edges where the two overlap and you could go either way de...

Re: Will the 787 fly?
I appreciate your sense of humor on this. However, I totally disagree with both of your contentions. Fasteners: Boeing has understood all along that some will have to be replaced at some point. While they really mucked it up with this many, the technology is in place to drill them out and replace th...

Re: Will the 787 fly?
Nothing has been stated that the fasteners do not work if correctly installed. What it does say is new technology has its issues and not all of them are purely technical (implementation of technology being its own issue and the fasteners are new to eveyone). As for comparing it to the A350 and sayin...

Re: The 737 Fiasco
More comment: I would not call this a fiasco, that would be something that requires a major design change and holds up a program (all the 787s issues combined are approaching if not exceeding Fiasco level) Its a screw up, and not a horribly serious one. The ones that are in the field will have these...

Re: CX orders A380
This is seriously bogus. An unnamed inside source and zero confirmation by the watchers of such events. And to add a badly worded phrase that "Boeing is not planning on production many 747-8I". Just what does that mean? Boeing will produce all that anyone is willing to buy. Could Boeing ca...

Some comments from a mechanic who works with fasteners (not on aircarft) Shuttle O Rings: The O ring was not at issue, nor any of the quality of the components. Re: 747-8 Progress
The -8 has now been delayed for 9 months (someone at one point commented that they thought this would happen, kudos to them for calling it right). It looks like most of the delay is the cascade affect from the 787 progrm flops. That being the outsourced portion (all new airframe and the systems them...
