Re: [Coronavirus] State aid for (European) airlines ?

Not that long ago, the European Commission has published guidelines for state aid. For me, the two most important conditions are: 1. the beneficiar must be able to refund the state aid within six months; 2. the aid may not falsify competition between airlines, airports and/or third parties. That in...

Re: [Coronavirus] State aid for (European) airlines ?

The problem with SN is that they chose growth over profitability... No? They didn't choose for growth instead of profitability. At the contrary: they had hoped that profit would follow their growth. ...which was mentioned here quite a few times. Indeed. You mentionned it and you repeated it. Becaus...

Re: Brussels Airlines in 2020

They where very profitable till the terrorist attacks and they had tough times after the crisis of 2008 like every other airlines. I remember an interview of a specialist saying that now we have a profitable airline and he was afraid something will happen but could never imagine these terrorist att...

Re: Brussels Airlines in 2020

In one way you are right don't let money flow to Germany so let's nationalise Brussels Airlines It is a pillar of our economy . I will not go in details but we need it and sure it's profitable and we need to keep or African experience! I repeat I my opinion those strategic industries has to be nati...

Re: Brussels Airlines in 2020

It's a bit like the banks in Island in 2008. Indeed, but this time it will be the whole economy, not one sector. There simply is not enough money and no economical reason to bailout everyone either, there was a massive overcapacity in the market, demand will be significantly less when we come out o...

Re: Brussels Airlines in 2020

In my opinion also weakest are those left without government backing I don't know for example if Ireland can back Ryanair and Air Lingus.
I'm more optimistic for the UK they have the strength to back up all the airlines I think.
It's a bit like the banks in Island in 2008.

It has to be a national project that involves a lot of cash a state can only assume.

Re: Alitalia near bankruptcy. Can it be saved?

I'm not agree an airline is a strategic industry sure for a country like Italy doesn't have to be profitable in my opinion. If Alitalia went bust a few years ago as it should have, Air Italy would have been Italy's national carrier by now... Cheers, Stij I don't think so to build again what Alitali...

Re: Alitalia near bankruptcy. Can it be saved?

Corona is an excellent opportunity for the Italian government (and/or Alitalia's administrators) to do what has to be done. Close it down, blame it on the virus. My 2 cents: That should be done, but they'll do exactly the opposite. They'll use the virus as an excuse to pump in even more money... Ch...

Re: Alitalia near bankruptcy. Can it be saved?

Chances are that after this big economic problem the economic system will be different...but let's see. But one thing is sure I think we are going to get out of this budget restriction for a while to get out of this crisis. And our national debt will surely increase enormously but this will be the o...

Re: Impact of the coronavirus crisis on aviation

don't forget Brussels Airport is the first employment pool in Belgium! It will have a big domino effect, restaurants in other hand will always exist maybe some will disappear but others will come. If we lose Brussels Airlines it will go to other airlines and we will lose or HUB with a lot of jobs t...

Re: Impact of the coronavirus crisis on aviation

I think Ireland's priority goes to Aer Lingus while obviously for the UK it goes to BA over Easyjet. Why would that be so obvious? EasyJet UK is assuring a lot of domestic routes in the U.K. and takes mainly Brits on holidays, whilst BA is focused on a hub and spoke model in LHR. Why use taxpayers ...
