Re: Malaysia Airlines flight MH370 has crashed into Indian O

Only 46 years in International ATC and Aviation (civil and military) Some of us enjoy mental exercises. Do you think that the people that projected the trajectory were impatient and just theorising? :D

Re: Malaysia Airlines flight MH370 has crashed into Indian O

I have my own theory that the plane did not descend to 4500 feet but remained at the higher FL. In one report the Malaysian Military reported that MH370 'went through the bottom of the screen' at 4500 feet. It may be that obstructions relatively near the station limit higher and lower coverage of bo...

Re: Malaysia Airlines says it has lost contact with flight M

I seem to remember a Lion Air 737 that crashed in to Mt ymittos (Greece). Examination has shown that pilot, crew and passengers were incapacitated/dead due to oxygen starvation. The plane flew till out of juice. In this case military could see non moving people in plane. There was also a bizjet with ...

Re: Boeing 737 (MAX) news

The Scimitar winglets look cute. However we should not forget that the Scimitar is a cutting tool for elimination of competion (in battle) Thus,I feel that other planes and higher vehicles need to their distance, since this winglet is a can-opener too.

Re: Ethiopian Boeing 787 on fire at gate in London Heathrow

Lets wait for the AAIB report! Tomorrow or a bit later. It will be a preliminary report. Hopefully the real source of the fire will be identified and the necessary corrective mesasures proposed (maybe including grounding).
We will see....................

Re: Ethiopian Boeing 787 on fire at gate in London Heathrow

Did a bit of reading up.....Lithium Manganese batteries can be volatile under certain conditions, i.e above 100 deg C and especially when exposed to fire/flames. Dunno the construction of the ELT battery, but if heated by another source nearby (I assume it was in something like an electronics bay), ...

Re: Ethiopian Boeing 787 on fire at gate in London Heathrow

It looks like Boeing may be sighing with relief. Inspectors are looking at an emergeny locator beacon located just under the fire area. It has lithium-manganese batteries. Honeywell the ELB manufacturer is sending their own people

Re: Ethiopian Boeing 787 on fire at gate in London Heathrow

Whatever the cause of the fire, the temperature must have been very high to torch the crp to melting point and to ignite/destroy insulation. the time element remains common. Seems to remind me of Swissair 111..... :(

Re: Ethiopian Boeing 787 on fire at gate in London Heathrow

Particularly transponder antennas are mounted on top and bottom of a/c to make sure they are seen by the secondart radar a/c while maneuvering. TCAS also calls for antennas on top and bottom of aircraft.

Re: Ethiopian Boeing 787 on fire at gate in London Heathrow

Looking at some fotos, the fire(s) seem extremely close to 2 antennas (transponder and DME?). Is there an electronics bay underneath? :?: In 40 years ATC I have never heard of a civil ATC transponder catching fire though. The burnthrough of the skin seems to indicate very high temperature (not just ...

Re: Boeing 787 news

RoMax, I dont think you understood what I was saying fully.Normally such a box should have a self test mode after installatiom. The installation engineer should have checked the unit for correct functioning before he left. At start up of the bird, the crew should have had a no-go from the battery/ba...

Re: Boeing 787 news

I dont understand how a sensor could be taped over and the plane could take off. Surely pre-flight checks should have shown a sensor anomaly. Was the plane just handed over to JAL? I would have thought Boeing (or subcontractor) must have made a handover test. How and why was the sensor taped over?

Re: Boeing 787 news

I am curious too. What the H+ll will happen if another battery starts smoking despite all the safety changes? :?: 100-200 beautiful birdies grounded? Re: Boeing 787 news

Will the japanese FAA and others accecpt this very short series of certification tests as proof that the lithium batteries wil not self-destruct under some future flight circumstances? I believe that nobody really understands the dynamics/reason for the overheating/smoking/burning of cells. :?:
