Actually, JAT did use Soviet/Russian aircraft way back in the day. In fact, a report I viewed many years ago named JAT as having the most "diverse" fleet of aircraft in a "modern day" airline. The report went on to say that this was a prime factor in the overall lack of success o...

Actually, these were B-73's and Tu's on a planned single engine descent from altitude all the way to the ramp. UN sanctions against "Yugoslavia" in the early '90's made for some interesting, albeit not well thought out, work-arounds.

Anecdotal info: I flew Jugoslav Aero Transport many moons ago when it was common practice to shut down - yes, shut down - an engine in flight to conserve fuel... I visited Beograd earlier this year and noted that the once 1st-rate aviation museum located at the airport had fallen into a poor state. ...

(Please don't consider this off topic!) But, on an earlier day in another discussion: I made mention of how much I sure do miss climbing the steps to board the magnificent Constellation when I was a kid, smiling, friendly and courteous "stewardesses", meal service, plastic pilot's wings, a...

To all: Great collections and pics! This topic could practically have its own forum "COLLECTIONS, MEMORABILIA, etc.".

I collect flight instruments (clocks, compasses, turn/bank indicators, altimeters, and so on), new & used, for/from former-Soviet bloc fighter aircraft.

On 12 July 1976, the Navy phased out the last C-117 (Douglas DC-3), perhaps the most famous transport plane of all time. The last C-117 was flown from Pensacola to Davis-Monthan Air Force Base, Arizona, the boneyard for most obsolete military aircraft. What a flight!

Here's another hoot: on a recent flight from Almaty to Astana, I noticed that the interior of the YAK-40 seemed brighter than usual. When I took a closer look at the cabin walls, the rips and raggedy places had been covered with duct tape, and the entire cabin PAINTED over with what seemed to be an ...

Not no, but HELL NO! For all the reasons above, AND the fact that any sense of privacy and solitude is continually being withered away from the "average" traveler. I recall when "half the fun was getting there". And, that included the trip to the airport - it was an event - not a...

These two guys were not only stupid - they also put hundreds, if not more, individuals lives at risk from the building evacuees panic to the likely casualties from falling Cessna debris over a highly populated area. Less important, but still an issue, is the cost to the U.S. taxpayer in wasted money...

I've flown on several Russian-built aircraft but two of my most memorable experiences: Back in 1991 boarded a Czech Air YAK-40, BEG-PRG. I seated myself and in an attempt to move the seat back just a bit, the two front legs of the seat popped loose. Non-plussed, the co-pilot simply asked that I take...
