Re: AF 447 crash : High-Altitude Upset Recovery

An excellent article on High-Altitude Upset Recovery from Aviation Week:

I found the discussion of high altitude versus low altitude aerodynamics especially interesting. Lack of control feedback in fly-by-wire aircraft is another factor discussed.

Re: JAL launch nonstop B787 between Tokyo and Boston

NRT-BOS great circle route max northing is N72°, so not a true polar route. In 1965 I flew in an SAS DC8 from ANC to Bodo which reached N86°+, but after the fall of the Iron Curtain that route is history. Boston runways are not that short. Delta contemplating massive narrowbody order

Delta Air Lines confirmed it has issued an RFP to "several major aircraft manufacturers" regarding a future order of as many as 200 firm aircraft with deliveries beginning in 2013 to replace aging DC-9s, Boeing 757-200s and Airbus A320s on mainline domestic flying. http://tinyurl.com/48j5t...

Re: CO/UA merger: a done deal.

One perk Continental did/does not have is the Economy Plus seating of United. As a frequent flyer on UA I automatically get seated in Economy Plus. The extra 4-5 inches of legroom really makes a difference, especially on long flights. I hope the combined airline keeps Economy Plus.

Re: B777 - landing in Gatwick (Bad Crosswind)

Nice video, but it looks like it's from a flight simulator. If so, it should have been so labeled. I expected to see a video of an actual x-wind landing.

If it is from a flight simulator, shouldn't it be posted in the Flight Simulator Forum?

Re: Was this a fast flight?

Using a web search I found a map depicting the jet stream during my HKG-SFO flight. Wind speed is in knots. Appears it was really steaming along!

Was this a fast flight?

I flew from HKG to SFO on 29 March in a UA B744. I had seat 19K, window bulkhead in the first row of Economy Plus. Used my Garmin GPS to log the flight. The track was far south of the great circle route and 390 nm longer. The maximum speed was 692 kts, (796 miles/hr, 1281 km/hr). The speed was over ...

Re: Ladies only toilet on ANA

Believe it or not, United used to offer "Men Only" flights from SFO to LAX (One can bet that the stews (old term, not PC now) were not male). Travelers could fly in a DC-8 with mixed PAX, or in a slower DC-7 with more entertainment. Ah, the good old days! http://www.stubchaer.com/UA_SFO_SB...

More recent reports state that the Cirrus and Pawnee did indeed have a mid-air collision, a change from earlier reports that the tow rope was hit. Also, there is at least one report that the occupants of the Cirrus were falling separately from the burning plane. http://tinyurl.com/ylkqjhy http://tin...

Qantas A380 delays

Qantas A380s were delayed on the ground at both Los Angeles and Melbourne recently with technical faults. Passengers were held on the tarmac for long periods. Not earth shaking news, but may be of interest to some.
