Re: Austrian Airlines considers South American flights

The opportunity window is closing indeed for SN. About the 1.5 day problem, I can see a solution for that but it's out of SN's reach due to complexity. SN can only do very simple things. The solution I have in mind is a cross between 5th freedom flights like SQ does them, and Cargo B used to work b...

Re: Korongo Airlines

It seems several airlines (including the partly BA daughter Comair) applied for the extra traffic rights that will become available on the fast growing Lubumbashi-JNB route, but Korongo doesn't seem to be one of them. http://www.tourismupdate.co.za/NewsDetails.aspx?newsId=67258 I could be wrong, bu...

Re: 700 jobs threatened at Brussels Airlines?

BRU is still indeed underused when we speak about long haul......South African Airlines is now also in the picture for a late evening flight. Considering how SA have kept cutting back their European network I would be very surprised to see them in BRU anytime soon. IIRC their European service has s...

LHR can't 'manage' with 2, it is seriously restricted by only having 2.

Re: Airbus to build a factory in the US

Another factor which I don't think anyone has mentioned yet is that it is easier to hire and fire in the US. If they need to increase production for a year or two they can do it through the US plant, then trim it back down again if demand drops.

Re: LATAM Merger approved

Now that Avianca-Taca have joined Star TAM legally must leave, it is just a question of when. Legal conditions attached to the merger ( read: take over of TAM by LAN) by regulators in both Chile and Brazil require that the airline NOT be in the same alliance as AV-TA.

Re: Also British Airways wants the Boeing 777X

also its because BA can wait untill the 777X is available and the routes where 4 engine are needed can be passed on to the A380. What routes does BA operate that would still require quads ? I can understand that they will need the A380 on some routes for capacity, but I can't think of any routes wh...

Re: THY is buying LOT?

Presumably it would be to buy up to 49% rather than to buy LOT outright. At the risk of getting flamed I can't see this being successful. To put it politely, in my limited experience, Poland is not a country which particularly embraces other ethnicities or cultures, and I can see any attempt by TK t...

Re: brussels airlines to New York!

Wouldn't a flight BRU-BKK-NRT be sensible? I use to remember that Brussels - Tokyo was doing pretty well in the Sabena era. What would be sensible about a/ going up against their *A partner (TG) and their newly launched BKK-BRU service? b/ going to Tokyo on such an out of the way routing? Also, can...

Re: Last A330-200 flight at SWISS

Last rumour I've heard JFK is bound to be launched september 2012. Am I the only one who thinks it would be odd to inaugurate a new North Atlantic route at that time of year? They would miss out on the packed flights of June-August which seem to be the only time that a lot of players actually make ...

Re: Last A330-200 flight at SWISS

Can they reach Johannesburg or Cape Town with the A330-200? They should be able to, SA operates the -200 to Europe. ( not sure whether PW versus RR makes a difference) Whether SN really want to go back into the extremely competitive South African market is another question. Compared to the other ot...

IIRC from the news stories when CA increased their stake a couple of years ago the reason they stopped at 29.9% (rather than 30% ) was that if they went any higher they would be legally obliged to launch a takeover bid. I will see whether I can find the news article from 2009.

Re: Fokker 100 progress

I have a great deal of difficulty in believing that it will be viable to resurrect a frame which has been out of production for around 14 years. IIRC the F100 was pretty heavy for it's size, partly because Fokker liked to build "robust" aircraft, that was fine when fuel prices were much lo...

I thought CA increased their shareholding to 29.9% more than 2 years ago... in any case, that still does not make them the largest share holder as I believe Swires still hold around 40%
