The Canadian aviation training provider CAE Inc. is considering the closure of its training centre at Brussels Airport by the end of the year, putting the majority of its workforce at risk. According to De Tijd, the company has launched a restructuring process at its site in Steenokkerzeel, where pilots from airlines such as Brussels Airlines and TUI fly Belgium undergo simulator training.

CAE initiated the legally required employee consultation procedure on 8 April, marking the first step toward a potential shutdown of its technical training activities in Brussels. If the plans go ahead, 22 out of 27 jobs could be affected.

The company cites structural financial issues as the main driver behind the decision. “There are structurally too many costs compared to the revenues we generate,” CAE said, pointing to a prolonged deterioration in performance. Although the Brussels site was still profitable in 2024, it has since returned to losses, with an even larger deficit expected for the current financial year.

In an internal document seen by De Tijd, CAE reportedly stated that the operation in Brussels is too small-scale to remain viable. Demand for several simulators has declined, and there is no longer sufficient long-term revenue outlook to justify continued operations at the location.

Trade unions reacted with surprise to the announcement. Paul Blondeel of ACV-Metea said the news came unexpectedly for staff.

CAE stressed it aims to limit the social impact of the restructuring, adding that affected employees will be encouraged to apply for other positions within the group.
