U.S. authorities seize more than 300 drones near World Cup venues

U.S. authorities have seized more than 300 drones operating near venues hosting the 2026 FIFA World Cup since the tournament began, according to the Transportation Security Administration.

Strict temporary flight restrictions are in force on match days, prohibiting all aircraft operations—including drones—within a three-nautical-mile radius and up to 3,000 feet above stadiums unless specifically authorised by air traffic control. Similar restrictions also apply around fan zones, where drones are banned within a one-nautical-mile radius and up to 1,000 feet above ground level.

The Federal Bureau of Investigation‘s Miami office reported issuing citations to 49 drone operators and confiscating 54 drones in Florida alone. The Federal Aviation Administration warned that operators who violate restricted airspace rules may face fines of up to $100,000, criminal prosecution and seizure of their aircraft.

Federal agencies have deployed counter-drone teams around World Cup stadiums to detect and neutralise unauthorised drones. The enhanced security measures follow broader U.S. efforts to strengthen protection against drone threats, including new counter-drone systems deployed along parts of the U.S.-Mexico border and measures introduced under an executive order signed by President Donald Trump.

Recent prosecutions involving illegal drone flights over major sporting events, including an NFL playoff game and the Boston Marathon, have highlighted the growing focus on enforcing airspace restrictions at large public gatherings.
