During the Farnborough Air Show on 18 July, Nigeria was proud to announce the launch of a new national carrier: Nigeria Air. But only two months after the official announcement, the Nigerian government has decided to bury its plans.

Hadi Sirika, Nigeria’s aviation minister announced on twitter: “I regret to announce that the Federal Executive Council has taken the tough decision to suspend the National Carrier Project in the interim. All commitments due will be honoured. We thank the public for the support as always.

No explanation was given after the announcement but critics and aviation experts were wary since the official announcement back in July, arguing that “Nigeria can’t afford an airline at this time“.
