Today (3 April), British regional airline Flybe was forced to cancel dozens of flights due to crewing issues. The airline said this was due to seasonality, pilot’s end of leave year, Easter holidays, base restructuring and a shortage of pilots across the industry.

We sincerely apologize to all of our customers and partners affected by the current flight cancellations. Whilst 85% of Flybe flights are operating as per normal, we do recognize the impact of today’s cancellations,” the airline said in a statement.

We have already identified several mitigation actions and will be issuing further updates throughout the day,” Flybe continued, “all those affected have been emailed and advised they can re-book for travel on an alternative flight or apply for a full refund.

On today’s cancellations, Christine Ourmières-Widener, Flybe CEO, commented in a video:

It’s not the first time that a European airline faces crewing issues: in 2017, Ryanair was forced to cancel over 2,000 flights in a period of six weeks disturbing the travel plans of thousands of travelers.
