Astronomy enthusiasts will have a rare opportunity to witness the 12 August 2026 partial solar eclipse from above the clouds, as Urania Public Observatory and ASL Group have announced an exclusive VIP eclipse flight departing from Liège Airport.

The two-hour charter flight, operated by an Embraer ERJ-135 private jet, will depart on the evening of Wednesday, 12 August, taking passengers towards Nantes, France, where they are expected to experience up to 96% solar obscuration—one of the deepest eclipses visible from Western Europe. With only 30 seats available, the flight offers a unique opportunity to observe the eclipse from cruising altitude, above any cloud cover that could obstruct views from the ground.

The flight is scheduled to depart from ASL Group’s private terminal at 19:00, following check-in at 18:30. The eclipse will reach its maximum at 20:21, before the aircraft returns to Liège at 21:36.

According to Urania, eclipses exceeding 90% coverage can produce spectacular visual effects, including the Moon’s shadow sweeping across cloud tops or the landscape below. Organisers note that an eclipse flight departing from Belgium with a comparable viewing opportunity will not be possible again until 23 September 2090.

The experience is priced at €799 per person and includes:

  • A preparatory information session at Urania Public Observatory in Hove, including a planetarium presentation.
  • A two-hour private jet eclipse flight towards Nantes.
  • Certified eclipse viewing glasses.
  • Guidance from a Urania astronomy expert throughout the flight.
  • Open bar service and light refreshments on board.

The flight will be operated aboard ASL Group’s Embraer ERJ-135, offering passengers a business-class experience while enjoying one of nature’s most remarkable celestial events.

Ahead of the flight, participants are invited to attend the information evening at Urania’s observatory in Hove on 10 August, where astronomers will explain the science behind the eclipse, outline the flight programme and present a planetarium show to help passengers make the most of this once-in-a-generation experience.
