Over the past two years, some 12 new airlines began operating flights to Armenia: Armenia Aircompany, Brussels Airlines, Qatar Airways, Wataniya Airways, Germania, Arkia Israeli Airlines, Cham Wings, Air Cairo, Turkmenistan Airlines, Red Wings, Nordwind Airlines and Pobeda, Armenia’s Main Civil Aviation Administration said.

Besides, 12 new destinations were opened from Yerevan:  Lyon, Brussels, Doha, Kuwait, Berlin, Prague, Tel Aviv, Damascus, Sharm El Sheikh, Ashgabat, Frankfurt, Astana. In addition, two airlines – Belavia and  Czech Airlines – have resumed flights to Armenia.

The Main Civil Aviation Administration said also that to help the Shirak airport in Gyumri and attract low-cost airlines, the tariffs for air navigation services were reduced by 50%, while the services of the weather service were made free.  The regulator singled out also a sharp increase in the number of transit flights through Armenia’s airspace.

Over the past two years, in addition to expanding the geographical coverage of flights, the Main Civil Aviation Administration has been working to improve the business environment, establishing cooperation with partner countries, training aviation professionals, as well as creating conditions for the development of small aircraft,” it said.

In particular, legislative changes have been developed that provide for simplified procedures for certification of aircraft, as well as other documentation. Also, it simplified license granting procedures.

Also, an agreement was initialled with the EU on “Comprehensive Air Transportation,” the ratification of which will allow liberalizing the Armenian market for all EU member states and introduce EU criteria to ensure a predictable business atmosphere for airlines. Also, 21 pilots working in foreign airlines returned to Armenia, and  50 new jobs were created for flight attendants.
