Yakutia Airlines Sukhoi Superjet 100-95B suffers a runway excursion after landing at Yakutsk Airport

On 10 October, a Yakutia Airlines Sukhoi Superjet 100-95B (RA-89011) suffered a runway excursion after landing at Yakutsk Airport, the main landing gear also collapsed. “At 03:20 local time, flight R3414 from Ulan-Ude went off the runway, just after landing at Yakutsk Airport,” the airline said in a statement. The Investigative Committee of Russia has opened a criminal case for violations of aviation safety and “major negligence“.

There were 87 passengers on board, including 7 children and 5 crew members. Passengers and crew were evacuated using the emergency slides (see video below). According to preliminary data, 4 people were brought to the medical center of the airport.

Yakutia Airlines has a fleet of five Sukhoi Superjet 100-95 aircraft – two of them are Long-Range LR -, according to information on AviationSafetyNetwork Yakutsk Airport’s airport runway 05R threshold was displaced by 1150 meters due to reconstruction. Runway 23L was available for landing only with a Landing Distance Available (LDA) of 2248 meters.

A few flights scheduled to operate to Yakutsk Airport were forced to divert to other airports, meanwhile the airport has reopened for departures.

The Investigative Committee of Russia launched an investigation into the accident and already initiated a criminal case for “violation of the rules of traffic safety and operation of air transport, which caused by major negligence”. According to sources close to the investigation commission the runway wasn’t prepared for this landing in icing conditions.

The Investigative Committee carried out an inspection of the scene of the accident, scheduled forensic examinations, carried out interrogations of witnesses, as well as other investigative actions aimed at establishing all the circumstances of the accident.
