Vilnius Airport was forced to suspend operations twice between Sunday evening and early Monday due to suspected smugglers’ balloons drifting toward the airport, prompting temporary airspace restrictions.
The first closure lasted from 18:55 to 00:25, and the second from 01:40 to 03:25. Lithuanian Airports warned of further delays throughout the day as crews and aircraft recover from the disruption.
A similar balloon-related shutdown last week affected more than 1,100 passengers.
Lithuania recently closed its border with Belarus for three weeks amid concerns over balloon incursions, which officials in Vilnius describe as a hybrid tactic by Minsk. Although the border reopened, Belarus is still preventing Lithuanian lorries from returning home, and the prime minister has warned that further closures remain possible.
