Lithuania has declared a nationwide emergency in response to increasing numbers of smuggling balloons drifting into its territory from neighbouring Belarus. The government approved the measure on Tuesday, citing national security concerns and growing disruptions to civil aviation.
Interior Minister Vladislav Kondratovi? said the emergency status was needed not only because of repeated flight interruptions, but also due to broader security risks. He was appointed national operations manager to coordinate the response.
According to the government, balloons carrying contraband are being routinely launched from Belarus and pose risks to human life, property, and the environment. The Interior Ministry warned that failing to act could undermine public trust and jeopardise national stability.
The Lithuanian Armed Forces will support the response, with the government preparing to expand the powers of troops. Under the proposal, soldiers would be allowed to assist law enforcement, restrict access to certain areas, stop vehicles, inspect documents or belongings, and detain individuals who ignore orders. The Defence Ministry said the enhanced powers are necessary as balloon intrusions have increasingly disrupted operations at Vilnius Airport.
Smuggler balloons and drones have entered Lithuanian airspace hundreds of times this year, disrupting more than 300 flights and affecting over 47,000 passengers. Officials have described the incidents as a form of hybrid attack by Belarus.
