The Latvian airline airBaltic adds flights for the Turku-Riga route for the spring and summer season beginning in March 2019. The new afternoon connection brings a needed addition for the morning and evening flights four days a week.
In Turku, the new flights are seen as a sight of the better economic situation. It also shows that the passenger volumes at Turku Airport are increasing.
“The new connections prove that Turku attracts as a destination. Airlines have noticed the increase in the use of the airport, and hence want to increase their service level”, says Minna Arve, mayor of the city of Turku.
Riga is an important transfer airport, through which one can reach many destinations. Consequently, the new connection makes it a lot easier to travel to European metropoles such as London, Milan, Berlin and Brussels.
“This improves access to and from Turku, while the new flights serve both business and leisure travellers. We are happy to deepen cooperation with airBaltic”, says Jani Jolkkonen, SVP od Airport Network at Finavia.
People living in or near-by Turku prefer Turku Airport especially because of its size – an airport with less traffic and easier access attracts.
The new connections take place on Monday, Wednesday, Friday and Sunday.
In addition to Helsinki and Riga, direct flights from Turku Airport include Mariehamn, Stockholm and Gdansk. Wizz Air announced last week that they will begin operating a direct route from Turku to Kaunas.
