Frustrated passengers were left in long queues at Israel’s largest international airport, Ben-Gurion Airport in Tel Aviv. The baggage handling system suffered a 7-hour malfunction which created luggage pile-ups in the departure hall of Terminal 3.
There were delays for at least 37 outgoing flights, with some flights departing without passengers’ checked luggage, on one of the busiest days of the year during the peak of vacation season, with some 80,000 passengers expected to pass through the airport on Monday alone.
The Israel Airport Authority claimed there was no immediate solution. The malfunction was fixed after seven hours, with airport officials promising to expedite affected flights.
Beleaguered passengers were standing in massive queues throughout Terminal 3, many sitting atop their suitcases, while embattled airport employees tried to maintain some semblance of order.
No other terminals were affected by the outage.
