Rome Fiumicino breaks the 50-million passenger barrier, cementing its role as Southern Europe’s leading hub

Share

Rome Fiumicino Airport has surpassed 50 million passengers in a single year for the first time, setting a historic milestone just ahead of the 2025 Christmas travel peak. With a further 2 million passengers expected between 22 December and 7 January, total traffic for the year is set to exceed 51 million, representing growth of more than 4% year on year.

The record performance has been driven by a network of 240 destinations in 80 countries, more than 30 new routes launched in 2025, and operations by 100 airlines, including six new carriers. Long-haul traffic has been a key growth engine, led by North America with 4.7 million passengers and strong off-season demand, while Asia recorded a 16% increase supported by routes to Korea, Japan, Bangladesh and the return of Cathay Pacific’s Hong Kong service. Short- and medium-haul growth was underpinned by expanding bases from carriers such as Wizz Air and easyJet.

Recognised for the eighth consecutive year as Europe’s Best Airport by ACI World and named “Airport of the Year” at the 2025 International Airport Summit, Rome Fiumicino continues to strengthen its global standing. The airport’s long-term development is guided by a €9 billion, fully self-financed Sustainable Development Plan aimed at boosting connectivity, resilience and competitiveness, while delivering lasting economic and employment benefits for Italy.
