The forthcoming CDG Express, operated by Hello Paris, represents one of the most ambitious transport upgrades in the Paris region in decades. Designed as a dedicated, high-performance rail link between the capital and its main international gateway, the service is scheduled to enter operation on 28 March 2027, marking a significant milestone in the modernisation of France’s transport infrastructure.

A direct, high-frequency airport link

At its core, the CDG Express is conceived as a non-stop rail shuttle connecting Paris-Gare de l’Est to Paris Charles de Gaulle Airport. The service promises a journey time of approximately 20 minutes, operating every 15 minutes from early morning (5:00) until midnight.

This configuration positions the CDG Express as a premium alternative to existing transport options, notably the RER B line, which—while widely used—faces recurring congestion and reliability challenges. By offering a predictable, high-frequency timetable and no intermediate stops, the new service aims to deliver a level of punctuality and comfort aligned with international airport rail standards.

Strategic objectives: capacity, sustainability, attractiveness

Beyond its operational characteristics, the CDG Express addresses several structural challenges in the Île-de-France mobility ecosystem:

  • Relieving saturated infrastructure: By diverting airport-bound passengers from commuter lines such as the RER B, the project is expected to rebalance usage across the network.
  • Supporting modal shift: The service is positioned as a lever to reduce road traffic and associated emissions, contributing to broader environmental objectives.
  • Enhancing global competitiveness: Major international hubs typically offer fast, dedicated rail links to city centers; CDG Express aims to align Paris with these benchmarks and strengthen its attractiveness as a global destination.

In this sense, the project is not merely a transport upgrade but part of a wider territorial strategy linking aviation, rail mobility, and economic development.

Infrastructure and engineering complexity

The delivery of the CDG Express involves a combination of new infrastructure and upgrades to existing rail assets. The 32-kilometre route integrates newly built sections—such as tunnels beneath airport runways—with the regeneration of existing lines and junctions.

Significant investment has also been directed toward modernising legacy infrastructure, including hundreds of millions of euros allocated to improve reliability and capacity on shared segments.

The project is backed by a consortium combining rail, aviation, and public investment expertise, notably SNCF Réseau and Groupe ADP, reflecting its hybrid nature at the intersection of transport systems.

Hello Paris: the operator at the centre of the project

As the future operator, Hello Paris is responsible for service delivery, safety compliance, and operational readiness. The company has already secured key regulatory approvals, including a Single Safety Certificate, and has launched training initiatives such as its own driver school to prepare for operations.

Its positioning emphasises service quality and customer experience, targeting both international travellers and business users seeking reliability and speed. This operational model reflects a shift toward more specialised, service-oriented rail offerings in Europe’s major metropolitan areas.

A transformative—but debated—project

While the CDG Express promises clear benefits, it also raises broader questions about pricing, accessibility, and integration with existing transport networks. Its premium positioning suggests it will primarily target air passengers rather than daily commuters, reinforcing its role as a specialised mobility service rather than a mass transit solution.

Nevertheless, its expected impact is substantial: improved passenger flows, reduced congestion on existing lines, and a strengthened link between Paris and one of Europe’s busiest airports.

Outlook

With less than a year remaining before launch, the CDG Express is entering its final phase of preparation. If successfully delivered, it will reshape the experience of travelling between central Paris and Charles de Gaulle Airport—bringing the French capital in line with global best practices in airport connectivity.

For Hello Paris, the challenge now lies not only in launching the service on time, but in delivering the reliability, efficiency, and user experience that such a flagship project demands.
