Heavy rain forced Ibiza Airport to suspend operations twice on Sunday, causing five flight cancellations and 16 diversions, according to airport operator Aena.
Operations were halted between 10:00 and 11:00, then again from 11:15 to 12:15 as the storm intensified and water had to be cleared from parts of the airfield. The two suspensions totalled two hours.
The storm also affected the terminal and surrounding areas. Access to the P1 car park was closed following the collapse of an awning, while one of the two lanes serving the express parking area was temporarily taken out of use. Work was under way to restore access.
Elsewhere in the Balearic Islands, Palma de Mallorca Airport also recorded numerous delays and some cancellations, according to Aena’s website.
