A Florida-based pilot has filed a lawsuit to block the planned renaming of Palm Beach International Airport after Donald Trump, arguing the move is unlawful and could pose safety risks.
George W. Poncy Jr., an FAA-licensed pilot, is seeking to overturn a new state law signed by Governor Ron DeSantis that would rename the airport “Donald J. Trump International Airport” from July 1, pending Federal Aviation Administration approval.
The lawsuit claims the legislation oversteps state authority by overriding local control, noting that the airport is owned and operated by Palm Beach County. Poncy argues that decisions about airport identity have traditionally been handled at the local level, and that the law lacks proper standards and procedural safeguards.
He also raises operational safety concerns, warning that renaming could lead to inconsistencies across aviation systems—such as air traffic control communications, navigation databases and flight planning tools—potentially creating confusion for pilots.
The airport has indicated the IATA/FAA code “PBI” would remain unchanged, although separate proposals have been made to alter the identifier to “DJT”.
A court has already denied an emergency request to block the law, meaning the case will proceed while implementation preparations continue. Airport authorities estimate the rebranding could cost around $5.5 million, with no dedicated state funding.
Bottom line: The case combines legal and operational arguments, testing state authority over airport governance while raising questions about the practical implications of renaming critical aviation infrastructure.
