Oslo Airport has launched an ambitious long-term modernisation plan aimed at handling growing passenger numbers and surging export demand, particularly in the cargo sector.
Led by airport operator Avinor, the project includes a complete rethink of the airport’s layout. A key element is the construction of a new cargo and logistics hub on the west side of the airport, which will increase capacity and improve efficiency for critical exports such as seafood—Norway’s second-largest export industry.
Relocating cargo operations will also free up space in central areas of the airport, allowing for expanded passenger facilities, new routes, and additional aircraft parking—currently a major constraint during peak periods.
To further increase capacity, Avinor plans to optimise use of the airport’s two existing runways through operational improvements such as rapid exit taxiways. This could significantly boost aircraft movements while delaying the need for a costly third runway.
The multi-phase development, expected to be completed around 2040 pending approvals, is designed to ensure Oslo Airport remains competitive, supports national logistics, and drives economic growth across Norway.
