Heavy rainfall on Monday evening caused severe disruption across New York City, with nearly 2 inches falling in just one hour, making it the second-wettest hour on record for the area. The downpour triggered flash floods, subway service disruptions, and major air travel chaos.
By Monday night, hundreds of flights were cancelled:
- LaGuardia (LGA): 195 flights (34%)
- Newark (EWR): 183 flights (29%)
- Reagan National (DCA): 131 flights (27%)
- JFK: 126 flights (16%)
Disruptions continued into Tuesday, with dozens more cancellations and delays.
Airlines most affected included Republic, American, United, Endeavor Air, and Delta—only United issued a travel waiver.
While the rain has subsided, a Hazardous Weather Outlook remains in place through Monday due to an incoming heat wave, with heat indices expected to reach 95–105°F (35-46°C) later in the week.
Flights to airports in New York and Washington DC are currently groundstopped due to thunderstorms. Flights not already in the air are not allowed to depart for JFK, LGA, EWR, IAD, or DCA. pic.twitter.com/bYTZmR7NUB
