Munich Airport has reached a historic milestone, welcoming its one-billionth passenger since opening in 1992 — a landmark moment underscoring its evolution into a major European hub.
The symbolic passenger, Amanda Walls from Colorado Springs, was greeted at Terminal 2 alongside representatives from Lufthansa and airport leadership, highlighting the long-standing partnership that has driven the airport’s growth.
Since its opening on 17 May 1992, Munich Airport has transformed into:
A hub serving ~100 airlines
Offering connections to 230+ destinations in over 70 countries
One of Europe’s leading premium airports
Its development has been closely tied to its role as a gateway for Bavaria and its strategic position in central Europe following German reunification.
The milestone comes amid solid operational performance:
43.4 million passengers in 2025
~337,000 aircraft movements (+3%)
Load factor: 80.9%
Cargo: 340,000 tonnes (+10%, above pre-crisis levels)
Executives, including CEO Jost Lammers, emphasised that the achievement reflects:
Long-term infrastructure and network development
A quality-focused hub strategy
Strong airline partnerships, particularly with Lufthansa
Bottom line: Crossing the one-billion passenger mark cements Munich Airport’s position as a top-tier European hub, with continued emphasis on sustainable growth and premium connectivity.
