Munich Airport has officially opened its new Terminal 1 pier, marking a major milestone in the airport’s long-term expansion and modernisation programme.
The facility entered regular operations on April 21, with more than 11,000 passengers passing through the new pier on over 70 flights on its first day. Senior executive Thomas Hoff Andersson welcomed the first travellers as operations commenced.
The opening was highlighted by several inaugural flights, including an arrival from American Airlines from Charlotte, which was greeted with a traditional water salute. Delta Air Lines operated the first departure from the pier to Detroit, while Cathay Pacific showcased an Airbus A350-900 in a special retro livery to mark its 80th anniversary.
The new pier completes a construction project that has been underway for more than seven years, carried out alongside ongoing airport operations. A six-month testing phase preceded the launch to ensure readiness.
Designed with modern architecture and improved passenger flows, the facility is intended to enhance efficiency and comfort within Terminal 1. The development forms part of Munich Airport’s broader strategy to deliver a more streamlined and future-oriented travel experience as passenger demand continues to grow.
