Munich Airport opens new Terminal 1 Pier, adding capacity and premium facilities for non-Schengen travel

Share

Munich Airport will officially open its new Terminal 1 Pier on 13 April, marking a major milestone in the long-term expansion of its infrastructure. The €665 million project, fully financed from the airport’s own resources, is designed to strengthen capacity, efficiency and passenger comfort, with a particular focus on non-Schengen traffic.

The new pier adds capacity for up to six million passengers per year and is one of Bavaria’s largest current infrastructure projects. Extending around 360 metres into the west apron and covering approximately 95,000 square metres, it can accommodate up to 12 short- and medium-haul aircraft or six wide-body aircraft simultaneously. Passenger processes are spread across six levels, including three dedicated to travellers, with centralised security screening using state-of-the-art CT technology, spacious waiting areas, retail and dining zones, and dedicated relaxation spaces. Energy-efficient systems underline the airport’s sustainability ambitions.

A key feature of the pier is its premium lounge offering. Munich Airport will operate the new 1,200-square-metre Airport Lounge World across two levels, offering apron and Alpine views, dining options, workspaces, rest areas and a children’s play zone. Emirates will also open a dedicated 900-square-metre lounge for its passengers.

From 21 April, around 40 airlines serving non-Schengen destinations from Terminal 1 will operate via the new pier. Ahead of the opening, Munich Airport has conducted an extensive trial operation since October, involving more than 1,500 test passengers, staff from across the airport community, and multiple emergency exercises. Feedback has been largely positive, particularly regarding the spacious layout, clear signage and modern digital processes, providing a strong foundation for a smooth start to full operations.
