Munich Airport leads passenger growth in German-speaking Europe in 2025

Share

Munich Airport recorded the highest absolute increase in passenger numbers among German-speaking countries in 2025, reinforcing its position as one of Europe’s leading hubs. A total of 43.4 million passengers travelled through the airport last year, an increase of 1.8 million passengers or 4.4% compared with 2024.

Flight activity also rose, with 337,000 take-offs and landings (+3%), while average seat occupancy reached a strong 80.9%, underlining sustained demand. Growth was driven primarily by European and intercontinental traffic: services to European and Mediterranean destinations increased by 4.3%, while long-haul traffic expanded by a notable 8.5%.

Munich’s network continued to broaden, offering flights to 232 destinations across 71 countries, served by 96 airlines. Cargo performance was particularly strong, with volumes rising 10% to 340,000 tonnes, exceeding pre-pandemic levels by 2%.

Despite higher traffic and external disruptions such as weather events and drone-related restrictions, Munich Airport further improved punctuality. On-time performance exceeded 75% in 2025, placing the airport among the top three major European hubs. The rollout of advanced CT scanners at security checkpoints significantly improved passenger flow, with 95% of travellers in Terminal 2 clearing security in under ten minutes.

CEO Jost Lammers highlighted the airport’s broader economic role, noting that Munich Airport not only supports secure employment but also acts as a key cargo and connectivity hub, driving economic growth across Bavaria.
