Lufthansa and Munich Airport have signed a new long-term agreement to deepen their partnership and drive future growth at one of Europe’s leading aviation hubs.

The deal extends cooperation through 2056 and includes plans to expand terminal infrastructure, notably the addition of a new pier connected to Terminal 2. This development could increase annual capacity by up to 10 million passengers, with a targeted opening around 2035.

A central element of the agreement is Lufthansa’s commitment to expand its long-haul fleet and network in Munich, reinforcing the airport’s role as a major international hub.

The partnership—originally established in 2003 with Terminal 2 as a joint venture—remains unique in Europe, with Munich Airport holding a 60% stake and Lufthansa 40%. Together, Terminal 2 and its satellite facility currently handle around 36 million passengers annually.

Beyond infrastructure, the agreement is expected to boost the regional economy, create jobs, and strengthen Bavaria’s global connectivity. Officials emphasised that the expansion will be managed within the airport’s existing two-runway system, with no impact on the long-debated third runway.

Overall, the move positions Munich for sustained growth, enhanced passenger experience, and increased competitiveness as a global aviation hub.
