Munich Airport and German Lufthansa want to intensify and continue their strategic cooperation in the sustainable further development of the airport hub. In a “Letter of Intent (LoI)” that was signed today, both parties have announced their intentions to expand the satellite building connected to Terminal 2.
The extension – giving the satellite building a T-shape – is intended to expand the passenger capacity of Terminal 2, which is already almost fully utilized, by up to ten million passengers per year. The aim is to foresee an increasing passenger demand while maintaining the highest quality for guests travelling through Munich Airport.
Terminal 2, as the rest of the airport, aims to be CO2 neutral by 2030. Additionally Lufthansa, the airport’s biggest operator, will continue to invest in a modern fleet with new, more fuel-efficient aircraft, such as the Airbus A350-900, which generates around 25 percent less CO2 and brings a noise reduction of up to 50 percent compared to its predecessors. Lufthansa already operates the most sustainable long-haul fleet of the Lufthansa Group at its Munich hub, which also includes 15 Airbus A350’s.
Further details of the expansion project will be scheduled and agreed upon in a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU).
