An African Union Mil Mi-24 peacekeeping helicopter registered AUO-015 crashed while landing at Mogadishu’s Aden Adde International Airport on Wednesday, killing at least five of the eight people on board. The aircraft, which had taken off from Baledogle Airfield, crash-landed just before touchdown.
The helicopter was destroyed by fire. The helicopter appears to have crashed on top of a hangar. The impact triggered an explosion due to munitions onboard, destroying nearby structures and injuring three civilians. The three survivors suffered severe burns and injuries.
The crash occurred around 07:30 local time, causing minor flight delays. Authorities have since resumed normal airport operations. The AU mission, AUSSOM, with over 11,000 personnel in Somalia, is assisting local forces in combating al-Shabab militants.
