Tragedy at Bergamo Airport: man dies after being sucked into aircraft engine

Share

A tragic incident occurred on Tuesday morning, July 8th, at Bergamo-Orio al Serio Airport in northern Italy, when a man died after being sucked into the engine of an aircraft. The event led to a temporary suspension of all flight operations for more than an hour.

According to preliminary reports, the man — believed to be around 35 years old — forcibly entered the airport area around 10:00 AM local time. He allegedly drove against traffic near the terminal, abandoned his car, and ran through the arrivals area on the ground floor. He then reportedly broke through a security door leading directly to the aircraft apron, where planes are parked and prepared for departure.

The aircraft involved was a Volotea Airbus A319, registered EC-MTF, scheduled to depart for Asturias Airport in Spain. At the time of the incident, the aircraft was being pushed back.

Airport operator SACBO confirmed that operations were halted between 10:20 and 12:00 to allow emergency services and law enforcement to respond. In a statement, the company described the event as an “incident that occurred on the taxiway,” noting that an investigation is ongoing to determine the exact circumstances.

Bergamo-Orio al Serio is one of Italy’s busiest airports, particularly known for low-cost and holiday traffic.
