Malta International Airport maintained its strong growth trajectory in spring 2026, ranking among the best-performing airports in Europe and surpassing one million passengers in May.

According to a recent report from Airports Council International, Malta International Airport recorded a 13.5% increase in passenger traffic in April, placing it among the strongest performers within the EU+ airport group.

The positive trend accelerated in May, when the airport welcomed 1.08 million passengers. Growth was supported by an expanded summer schedule offering more than 110 destinations, including three newly launched routes, and an 18.6% increase in available seat capacity.

Despite the significant capacity increase, the airport achieved a strong seat load factor of 83.5%, underlining sustained demand for travel to the Maltese Islands. The performance aligns with broader European travel trends, with Mediterranean destinations remaining among the most popular choices for summer holidays.

The United Kingdom remained Malta’s largest source market, accounting for 21.3% of passenger traffic. It was followed by Italy, Poland, Germany and France, all of which recorded year-on-year growth ranging from 8% to 62.5%.

The figures reinforce Malta’s position as one of Europe’s fastest-growing leisure destinations and highlight the continued strength of demand for Mediterranean travel in 2026.
