Flights diverted at Luxembourg after small plane misses landing

Share

A small private aircraft accident at Luxembourg Airport on Sunday afternoon caused major disruption to flight operations, forcing several inbound flights to divert and triggering significant delays.

According to local media reports, an Antonov An-2-type aircraft made an emergency landing at Luxembourg’s Findel Airport. During the approach and landing sequence, the aircraft reportedly struck the runway with one of its wings, resulting in a very hard landing.

The runway was subsequently closed while emergency and recovery operations were launched. The Grand Ducal Fire and Rescue Corps (CGDIS) confirmed that emergency crews had been deployed to the scene from around 17:00 local time. No injuries were reported among those on board the aircraft.

The closure severely disrupted operations at Findel. According to airport authorities, seven arriving flights were diverted to alternate airports, while at least 16 arrivals were delayed and three flights were cancelled. Three departing services also experienced delays.

Real-time flight-tracking data showed aircraft holding while awaiting further instructions, including at least one Luxair flight that was unable to land and had to circle. Airport information systems indicated that additional flights scheduled later in the day were also affected, with some aircraft rerouted to other airports.

Luxembourg Airport said recovery operations were underway and warned that flight operations would remain significantly disrupted until the runway could be reopened. Airport authorities have not yet provided further details regarding the cause of the accident or the expected timeline for a full return to normal operations.
