UK backs London Heathrow’s third runway plan, paving way for 2035 takeoff

Share

The UK government has confirmed that Heathrow Airport Limited’s proposal for a third runway will serve as the basis for the airport’s long-planned expansion, setting the project on course for potential completion in 2035. Transport Secretary Heidi Alexander said the decision allows the government to push ahead with a swift review of the Airports National Policy Statement (ANPS), enabling a planning decision by 2029. The updated ANPS will undergo public consultation next summer.

Ministers say Heathrow’s expansion is essential to support trade, tourism, and hundreds of thousands of jobs nationwide, noting record passenger numbers at the airport this summer. The government assessed competing proposals and concluded that Heathrow Airport Limited’s plan was the most deliverable and best aligned with ambitions to reach a development consent decision within the current parliament.

The third runway plan must still meet the UK’s climate, noise, and air-quality obligations. The Climate Change Committee has been asked for fresh advice to ensure compatibility with the UK’s net-zero commitments. If approved, the new runway would be accompanied by a major redesign of London’s congested airspace to allow for quicker, quieter, and lower-emission flight paths.

The move comes as the government accelerates wider aviation expansion—following approvals at Luton and Gatwick—and boosts investment in sustainable aviation fuel production to help the sector meet climate targets.
